Educators Professional Development

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
- Mahatma Gandhi

The World Affairs Council is recognized by the State Board for Educator Certification as a Continuing Education Provider for the State of Texas
(CPE #501096).

The most important way the World Affairs Council can serve the education community is by providing professional development opportunities for Houston educators. We regularly provide opportunities for teachers to enhance their knowledge of international issues.

Professional development programming includes:

Educators' Forum
A monthly seminar for teachers on select international topics, guided by experts from leading research centers and universities.  Lesson plans and reference materials are furnished with each event. Gifted and talented credit hours have been approved in advance by the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented.

Global Issues in Depth
This full-day professional development opportunity for teachers focuses on current global issues. Past workshops include Energy in Crisis, India on the Modern World Stage, and The "Axis of Evil" 5 years later: Inside Iran, Iraq, and North Korea.

An opportunity for teacher fellows to travel overseas for in-depth study, complete with pre- and post-trip briefings.  Since 2005, teacher fellows have traveled, all expenses paid, to China, Vietnam & Cambodia, Turkey, Russia, and India.

Global Energy Initiative
The Independent Petroleum Association of America has given us the resources to deepen and enrich progams on global energy.  Events have included an all-day teacher workshop, Energy in Crisis; in-services at local school districts and state social studies conferences; and emphasis on energy geopolitics in all programs.
District In-Service Programs
Upon the request of school districts, the Council has provided speakers to supplement various in-service programs. We ask that district requests be given at a minimum of 6-8 weeks prior to the event.

Resources for teachers

Our teacher resources include a curriculum support library at the Council, and a website, complete with compilations of internet resources, curriculum resources on the web, and more.

"The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country."
Lincoln's Second Annual Message to Congress, December 1, 1862.
