International Travel
for secondary and post-secondary teachers

The international trips allow teachers to gain a first-hand perspective about a country and gives depth to their teaching about the world.  The Council will sponsor:

6 teachers  - Full Fellowships ($500 non-refundable for teachers who are selected)
6 teachers  - Half Fellowships ($500 non-refundable for teachers who are selected)
6 teachers  - Partial Fellowships of $500 ($500 non-refundable for teachers who are selected)

Highlights of Ancient Egypt
March 16-24, 2008

Full Fellowship
Covers full trip fee, teachers who are selected are required to pay a $500 non-refundable deposit for administrative costs.

Half Fellowship: $1350

Covers half of trip fee, teachers who are selected are required to pay a $500 non-refundable deposit for administrative costs.


Total Trip Cost: $2700
All teachers all welcome to participate by paying the total trip cost.

Fellowship Eligibility


A fellowship is available to these Houston-area educators:

  • Faculty who teach secondary social studies and foreign language
  • Community college faculty who teach international courses

A limited number of fellowships will be awarded and preference will be given to educators who are active in the Council's education programs.  Educators who are not active in the Council are unlikely to receive a travel fellowship.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must have demonstrated skills in developing lesson plans
  • Applicants may not have lived in the country, and they may not have traveled there on a similar tour.
  • Applicants must be able to travel without special assistance.
  • Special diets cannot be accommodated. 

Expectations: 

  • Fellows must attend all pre- and post-trip briefings, fewer than three. 
  • During travel, fellows must participate in all activities.
  • Fellows must create a lesson plan on a topic of their choice for the Council to post on the website for others.
  • Fellows must create presentations and lesson plans about their trip to give at district in-services and other professional conferences.

Evaluation


Applications are judged by a panel and will be evaluated on
  • The relevance of the applicant's teaching assignments 
  • Strength of resume
  • Involvement with the Council and other professional development activities
  • Topic of lesson plan and presentation

Teachers who have already received a fellowship with the Council are eligible, although first time recipients will receive preference.  Past fellows will be asked to furnish an evaluation of their lesson plan and post-trip professional presentations.
