Marshall Memorial Fellows

The German Marshall Fund of the United States is a nonpartisan American institution dedicated to promoting cooperation between North America and Europe. It was founded in 1972 with a gift from Germany as a permanent memorial to the European Recovery Act of 1947—known as the Marshall Plan in honor of George C. Marshall who was then secretary of state and who had been chief of staff in World War Two.

The Marshall Memorial Fellows were established to introduce a new generation of European leaders to America's institutions, politics, and culture. In 1999, the Fund began a companion program to expose future American leaders to Europe.  Fellows spend three weeks in Europe studying European-North American politics with expenses paid.

The World Affairs Council is soliciting nominations for Fellows for 2011. They must be healthy and 28-40 years old. Selection considers academic achievement, leadership ability, and demonstrated international interest.  Nominations must be by a leader; people may not nominate themselves or their relatives.

Nominees must meet these criteria:

No significant experience in Europe   Have a record of achievement
