Houston Urban Debate League

Debate is one of the best ways to encourage critical thinking, develop students' communication skills, build confidence, and nurture leadership. The Houston Urban Debate League helps teachers use debate as an educational tool. They hold summer debate workshops for students and coaches, sponsor tournaments during the year, and host a city-wide debate championship.

The World Affairs Council of Houston will support their work by providing relevant speakers on both sides of the issue for workshops and briefings. The national debate challenge for the coming year is particularly suited to this collaboration.

Resolve: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its military and police presence in one or more of the following: South Korea, Japan, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, and Turkey.

"The Council has already given us outstanding speakers who are able to cover US military issues from both points of view. We look forward to having a great debate season."
