Global Issues Summer Institute

Teachers gain a deeper understanding of contemporary global issues at this annual July event. Sessions bring leading experts and master teachers together to cover the most compelling issues of the day.  This week-long institute also provides an opportunity for teachers to share classroom experiences and teaching techniques.

The Institute
The 2007 week-long Summer Institute was hosted by St. Thomas University. 


The topics included:
  • Latin American politics, energy, and indigenous populations
  • French foreign and domestic policy
  • Russian oil and gas industry, the Chechen wars, and youth culture
  • Buddhism and Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • Global poverty
  • U.S. immigration policies
  • Contemporary Taiwan and China relations


Professional Development Credits

The Institute is under review for 26 hours of credit by the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented.

The State Board of Educator Certification has approved the World Affairs Council to furnish Continuing Professional Education to teachers.  The Council is CPE 501096. We are not permitted to duplicate G/T certificates. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

Curriculum Development
Institute participants are expected to create a lesson on an international issue. Curriculum will be due to the World Affairs Council of Houston by September 14, 2007. All curriculum will be posted on the Council website to be shared with other educators.

To register for the institute, please send the registration form and a $100 check payable to WACH:

On receipt of your lesson, the Council will refund the $100 fee. Your registration will not be refunded to you if you fail to attend the workshop or cancel your registration after the deadline of May 18th, 2007.


The workshop will be limited to 40 participants, and registration is first come, first serve.
The last date to cancel your registration for a refund is
May 18, 2007.  Cancellations made after this forfeit their $100 fee.

We appreciate your understanding in this matter as it will be difficult to find a replacement once the school year ends and our budget is based on receipt of tuition from a full class.
