Global Ambassador
Europe and Taiwan
Thousands of students from the Houston area have lived or studied abroad during their college career. The World Affairs Council of Houston announces the spring 2008 Global Ambassadors program to bring some of the most outstanding of these college students to 6th-12th grade classrooms to speak about their experiences abroad. Our goal is to expand middle school and high school student's knowledge of world cultures through a first person presentation.

The college students are chosen through a selective application process to ensure that the presentations are interesting and substantive.

Patricia Manjarrez is a senior International Studies major with minors in Business Administration and Spanish at the University of St. Thomas. Patricia has traveled to many interesting places including Argentina, Spain, Taiwan and Eastern Europe. She graduated from Kingwood High School in 2004 and will graduate from the University of St. Thomas in May 2008. Her International Studies degree has a regional concentration in Latin America and East Asia. Growing up in Mexico and in the United States further encouraged Majarrrez's sense of curiosity for understanding other cultures and world politics.
Patricia's study abroad experience cultivated her knowledge of each country's culture, history, economics, and politics. She took part in Model EU simulations, taking a Contemporary Taiwan course with UST faculty and engaging in a regional study of Latin America course taught by the Director of the Center for International Studies during her stay in Argentina. Some of Patricia's most memorable learning experiences include meeting with important government officials, such as ambassadors and political party members, and having the classroom come to life during her various trips. In addition, some of Patricia's best personal experiences include creating life-long friendships and visiting important historical sites around the world. She looks forward to a trip to China in June. This trip is especially important because she has been researching the country for her senior thesis entitled, "Challenges to China's Future Economic Growth and Development". |
