Friend of the Profession Award
Presented to the World Affairs Council of Houston in recognition of our
Foreign Language Symposia

The Texas Foreign Language Association has honored the World Affairs Council with the Friend of the Profession Award.  This award reflects the outstanding contributions of this organization to our Languages Other Than English educators, students, programs and communities.

The Council thanks all who have helped in our Foreign Language Symposia, including table hosts, native speakers, and our corporate partners  – Aramco Services, Schlumberger, and Anadarko Petroleum.

The language symposia are one-half-day events, held in German, French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Russian, and Italian. Students may recite poems, sing songs, or offer other performances in their language. They perform during a theme lunch, with native speakers at each table who talk with students. The symposia honor their achievement as well as allow them to demonstrate their skills. Last year, 650 students participated; more are expected in 2009.

I invite you to help next year’s symposia:

• Join luncheon tables, enjoy a conversation with students in the language of the day.
• Bring country-related artifacts to the program.
• Work with students in their language classrooms.
• Contribute to one of the lunches - $100 to $1,000

April 2009

The nine symposia will be in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese,
Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.

"Difference of opinion leads to enquiry, and enquiry to truth; and that, I am sure, is the ultimate and sincere object of us both. We both value too much the freedom of opinion sanctioned by our Constitution, not to cherish its exercise even where in opposition to ourselves."
