To fuel its strong economy, Ireland is investing heavily in wind and other renewable energy sources. Ambassador Collins will discuss the many opportunities for collaboration between Houston and Ireland in this growing market for sustainable energy.
Michael Collins joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1974 after earning a BSc from Trinity College in Dublin. He served as Ireland’s ambassador to the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia (a post which covered Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates). In 2001 Michael Collins was appointed Second Secretary General at the Department of the Taoiseach and in that capacity has had overall responsibility for international and European Union affairs, particularly the Northern Ireland peace process.
Michael Collins was appointed as Ireland’s ambassador to the United States in September 2007. He has also been commissioned by his Government to conduct a Strategic Review of relations between Ireland and the United States which he expects to complete by the end of 2008.
In May 2008, Ambassador Collins was honored with the award of “Diplomat of the Year” by the World Affairs Council of Los Angeles.
