The Award and Jesse H. Jones

Each year the World Affairs Council honors a Houstonian who—in the spirit of Jesse and Mary Gibbs Jones—has contributed to the international life of the city. Jesse H. Jones was visionary in his recognition that the city’s future depended on our international engagement and was largely responsible for securing the funding for the Houston ship Channel. He built Houston—including hotels, newspapers, banks, and office buildings—and accomplished even more in public service. He served as director general of the American Red Cross in World War One, chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, and Secretary of Commerce. Mrs. Jones joined him in concern for the education of our children.

The World Affairs Council is Houston’s most prestigious citizen’s forum. With over 7,000 members, it is now one of the largest and most successful in the nation. Through varied and balanced programs, the Council presents information on historic and current global issues, furthers understanding of international relations and foreign policy, and contributes to national and international policy debates. The result is a better educated citizenry and the advancement of Houston as an international center.

Rex W. Tillerson is chairman and chief executive officer of Exxon Mobil Corporation, the world’s largest publicly traded oil and natural gas company. In that role, he leads a global workforce of about 80,000 employees, with the largest concentration – about 14,000 – in Houston.

A native of Wichita Falls and a graduate of the University of Texas, Tillerson joined Exxon Company, U.S.A. in 1975 as a production engineer.

Following several domestic assignments spanning nearly two decades, in 1995 Tillerson was named president of Exxon Yemen Inc. and Esso Exploration and Production Khorat Inc. In 1998, he was appointed vice president of Exxon Ventures (CIS) Inc. and president of Exxon Neftegas Limited, where he managed Exxon's holdings in Russia and the Caspian Sea.

Tillerson was named chairman and CEO of Exxon Mobil Corporation in 2006, having served as a senior vice president since 2001. He oversees the operations of a company that is committed to integrating good corporate citizenship throughout its global business operations. The company is noted for its leadership in areas such as malaria prevention and eradication, math and science education, and programs to advance economic opportunities for women in developing countries. From 2004 to 2008, ExxonMobil, its employees and retirees gave more than $800 million in support of health, education and other social efforts worldwide.

Tillerson actively supports education and youth efforts. In 2007, he announced ExxonMobil’s 10-year, $125 million commitment to the National Math and Science Initiative, and he is a member of the executive board of the Boy Scouts of America. He also serves in various roles for other major organizations, including the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Commission on Smart Global Health Policy, the Business Council for International Understanding and the Emergency Committee for American Trade.

"The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country."
Lincoln's Second Annual Message to Congress, December 1, 1862.
